This was our first stay at Walston Mansion Farmhouse, but all the other guests had visited previously and obviously had been well satisfied. The proprietor Mrs.Margaret Kirby is well experienced in caring for her guests and nothing seems too much trouble if you need to ask for anything. Our visit exceeded expectations; we would book again and will recommend to others. The accommodation is a typical farmhouse, cosy and warm with a log fire, certainly not pretentious and a great place to relax. Our bedroom was clean and airy, the bed comfortable and bed linen, towels etc freshly laundered. An abundant supply of hot water was available for bath and showers. The access road to the property is unclassified but once located is an easy route by car, and there is no problem parking when you arrive. The food, which is homemade, is excellent and the helpings provided are most generous. In a morning pots of home made jams and preserves were on the table and your choice of a traditional hot breakfast is cooked and served to your liking. We thought paying the extra for the evening meal is good value for money and also gives you the opportunity to chat with the other guests. The location is ideal for exploring, and in my opinion is well suited to couples or retired folks who enjoy touring and discovering new places of interest in an unspolit rural area.

Coach tours are fine but they most often only visit the major tourist attractions. We decided there is much more to see and do but we did need our own transport to get around.Lanarkshire was chosen being a comfortable driving distance from home and Biggar was selected as a place to stay as having many things of interest in a close proximity.Biggar is a small market town with a quiet elegance but also a bustling charm of its own.Facilities such as public toilets and parking were excellent, as were the shops. Our short visit took in the Leadhills Visitors Centre,Wanlockhead Railway and some of the Biggar Museums. These included The Moat Park Heritage Centre,Gladstone Court, the Greenhill Covenanter's House and the Biggar Heritage Trail. For anyone interested in Industrial Heritage the preserved gasworks at Biggar is amust to see,and I am sure many model makers or railway enthusiasts would find this a perfect subject to consider. At all locations the staff and volunteers were most helpful. Our return journey home was the A701 (Biggar to Moffat),this a scenic route through stunning countryside before joining the motorway South. Plenty more places to visit were noted and we plan a return visit in the Spring.
