My granddaughter loves castles so I booked Torrisdale so she would have the opportunity to stay in a real castle. I went onto the Mull of Kintyre, for the day, during the Easter holidays and went down the road - Cleonaig to Campbeltown to look at the outside of the castle. I knew, when I made the booking that it was a single track road. At Torrisdale we were impressed by both castle and surroundings and were looking forward to our stay. However, on a steep twisting turn on the road south of the castle we were nearly hit head on. I had to brake abruptly on the steepest part of the road, going up, and the car stalled. I was so upset I was shaking, the handbrake wouldn`t hold the car, so I`d no option but to go slowly backwards down a sharp turn with a steep drop at one side. I did eventually get the car started but was so upset, I had to find a safe place where I could pull over to recover. My Grand-daughter was in tears and said she didn`t want to stay at the castle because the road scared her. I thought things over, felt I couldn`t risk the same happening again so I cancelled our stay at Torrisdale. I think something should be done so that part of the road isn`t so steep and the bends not as sharp, and you would get more tourists to that side of the coast. Not everyone owns a 4x4 or has a car with a powerful engine. Yours sincerely, Mrs B Tankard.

It felt like a home, was good value for money, spacious, comfortable furniture, plentiful cooking and eating utensils and more bathrooms than anticipated. It was easy to heat. The owners are helpful and friendly, as were the staff.

Location

The country atmosphere was important for us and the trip to Campbeltown is relatively easy. It was a great base to launch the 'great ancestor hunt'! (The Stepping Stones on the Kintyre walk to Carradale are not for the faint hearted or those wishing to keep dry feet.)

We stayed in the South Lodge which is the gatehouse of the castle. The place was clean and comfortable, and once we got a good log fire going was cosy too. There was a great supply of wood provided for our use in the basement. There was a beautiful view across the sea to Aran from the living room.

The accommodation was spacious and comfortable without being expensive. Also, it feels a little special to live in a castle. The golf vouchers were welcomed by the golfing members of the party.

Location

We walked part of the Kintyre way and enjoyed it but would prefer less walking along roads and shorter steps up over stiles.
