the room was nicely decorated, comfortable, en suite and had everything we required. the breakfast we had was generous and cooked to perfection, with plenty of options for us veggies and the couple who run the guest house are friendly, knowledgeable about the city and have a lovely wee westie called mirren. all in all this stay represented good value for money. we will definitely stay here again next time we're in edinburgh.

Location

we were going through to edinburgh for a concert at the playhouse, the macdonald guest house was the best value and location we could have hoped for. we had time the next day to visit the national gallery which was running a renaissance exhibition at the time, it was breathtaking in scope and the fact that most of the exhibitions run are free make it my top choice of attraction.

The owners! My daughter and I felt very comfortable. The owners were attentive to our needs. Our room was very clean and very well appointed. The food delicious! Even the blood pudding!!!!! Not your usual American fare! And we loved their little dog. The McDonalds are wonderful people.

Location

We especially enjoyed the Castle. Public transportation right out the front door was so handy. The Grain Store restaurant was delicious - 100 year old building. And Fisherman's for great seafood.

The room was very comfortable and clean, with a lovely bathroom. Hospitality was excellent and enjoyed talking to the friendly proprietors

Location

Very helpful advice and information given for visiting the city's attractions, also the Guest House is very conveniently situated within walking distance of most attractions, with plenty of frequent buses if needed.

Pro === The staff is warm and very friendly. The guest house is very well placed, just 5 minutes walk from the Playhouse and 10 minutes walk from the city centre. There are a lot of buses at 100m of the guest house. The room was very clean, made every day. No noise came from outside. The bathroom was nice, large and very clean too. Breakfast was excellent. Cons ==== The LCD display is too high on the wall in front of the bed so you don't have a good image quality. The bad thing about the room is that there were neither flaps nor opaque curtains. So if you are - like me - sensible to the daylight then you will be waken up very early in the morning in spring or summer. That is not fair at all when you are on holidays and when you want to sleep :-(

Location

The Playhouse is a good place to attend a concert. The Calton hill is worth the view, with greek monuments. The Royal Botanic Garden is very nice.
