The accomodation was fine room lovely food good. When we arrived were met by a very nice young man who took in our bags and gave us information about the area and where to go for a good breakfast. The only fault we had was one night we were out and when we returned we asked would we be able to have a drink, the fellow told us they did not have a bar licence but in the room we had breakfast there was alcahol on display so why were they not allowed serve it.
Location
The hotel was very central to Princess street and all the major attractions and a nice walking distance.

I only stayed one night, the room was a good size with everything that was needed. The staff member who checked me in was great, friendly, helpful and he is getting the excellent rating, I am sorry I cannot remember his name. I was there a short time so no facilities were used.

Our room was fine, bed acceptable en-suite very clean and spacious. Staff were helpful and courteous, breakfast was basic but nice variety.
But January and there was no heating on was not good; we only used the room for changing and sleeping so did not need to complain but it,s not on our list of hotels to go back to.
Location
The hotel was exactly in the middle of the area we wanted to be in.

Room 9 is on the front facing York Place, which is a very busy multiple lane thoroughfare-so it is noisy. Needed ear-plugs to sleep. The room was exceptionally large, with a bathroom the size of a small bedroom in some hotels. The shower cubicle, however, was a standard small one. The shaver light was so high it was impossible to reach - so we have no idea of whether it worked or not. Everything was clean and tidy. Breakfast ('continental') was plentiful but cold, toasted crumpets are very solid, not the thing to start the day with (or have any time really). The staff were cheerful, willing, helpful. We were allowed to leave our one bag from late morning on day of arrival until we booked in later (about 18:30) and on day of departure left it to be collected at 19:00, a tremendous help.
Location
We tend to walk rather than use transport (we arrived at Waverley by train. The Ballantrae is very easy to reach, with easy walking distance. It is in a very good, central, easily accessible position (could not really be much better) if you want to 'do' the Old and New Towns. George street, Princes Street and the roads parallel to and between them are easy to reach, as is the National Portrait Gallery (very good - for pictures, exhibitions, occasional concerts and 'coffee'). Walking to the Old Town is easy to do, though, for those who do not know the City, they need to be aware of the steepness of the hills and the numerous sets of long, steep stairs (which really make this part of Edinburgh so different from almost anywhere else. The variety of memorials, their inscriptions and the Adam mausoleum in Greyfriars' churchyard are worth a visit. The Royal Museum and it's new neighbour/extension is splendid - even just to sit in for refreshment (it was good before, but is now much better - except for the diabolically awful floor-plan guide). To have a peaceful walk in the city get the free museums' bus to the Dean Gallery, walk to the Museum of Modern Art and then take the Water of Leith path eastwards all the way to the Leith water front (ca. 6km / 4ml). In Leith, on the corner of Shore facing Sandport street is a splendid Turkish café with very good (not too sweet) cakes, big pots of tea and a very cheerful, friendly staff. There are buses No.22, unbelievably frequently, back from Leith to the end of York Place (for the 'Ballantrae') and Princes Street.
